A floor-coating quote may list primer, base coat, broadcast, grout coat, and topcoat. Those are not five names for the same material. Each layer has a job, and changing or omitting one can change the floor’s adhesion, thickness, appearance, texture, chemical performance, and service life.
There is no universal stack that fits every slab. Some systems combine roles; others repeat a broadcast or finish. The right way to read a proposal is from the concrete upward.
Layer zero: the concrete substrate
The slab is the foundation of the system. Before coating, it should be assessed for soundness, laitance, oil, curing compounds, sealers, old coatings, repairs, moisture, cracks, and joints. Mechanical preparation removes material that would interfere with bond and creates the surface profile required by the manufacturer.
Preparation is not a decorative step. If a coating bonds to a weak surface layer, that layer can separate from the concrete. If moisture or condensation is outside the product’s limits, the floor may blister, soften, or delaminate even when the mixing was correct. A contractor may need to test concrete moisture before epoxy and select a system based on the results.
Primer: the first connection
A primer is the first resin layer applied to prepared concrete. Depending on the formulation, it may wet the profile, reduce outgassing risk, promote adhesion, help seal porosity, or serve as part of a moisture-control design.
Primer is not always a generic thin epoxy. Manufacturers offer different primers for dry concrete, more porous slabs, rapid-cure systems, or documented moisture conditions. A primer intended for one system should not be substituted casually into another.
Application matters as much as selection. Porous areas may absorb material differently. Puddles, missed spots, contamination, or material placed outside its working time can create defects that remain under every later layer.
Base or body coat: build, color, and function
The base coat is often the main pigmented layer and can provide much of the system’s film build. It may be a roll coat, self-leveling resin, slurry, or mortar, depending on the design. In decorative broadcast floors, the wet base coat also receives flake or quartz.
Color selection matters here because a partial broadcast intentionally leaves some base visible. Even in a full broadcast, the base color can affect small gaps, edges, and the overall blend. The coating must be placed at the specified spread rate so there is enough wet resin to receive and hold the media.
Broadcast: more than decoration
Broadcast media is distributed into uncured resin. Common options include decorative vinyl flake and colored quartz aggregate. The broadcast can:
- Create a multicolor or mineral appearance
- Help disguise minor visual variation, dust, and everyday marks
- Add texture to the system
- Increase build when incorporated at sufficient loading
- Provide a mechanical surface for the next resin layer
A light decorative sprinkle and a broadcast to rejection are different specifications. In a full-broadcast flake floor, media is applied until the wet resin will not accept more and no glossy wet areas remain visible. After cure, loose material is removed and the surface is scraped or sanded as the system directs.
Quartz epoxy flooring can use one or more broadcasts to create a dense, textured decorative surface. The number of broadcasts and aggregate size affect build, appearance, material use, and cleaning characteristics.
Grout or seal coat: locking in the broadcast
A grout coat flows around and over the retained aggregate. Its job is to lock the broadcast into the floor and fill some of the voids between particles. A seal coat may serve a similar purpose in another system. Terminology varies, so the sequence and coverage are more important than the label.
The amount of resin changes the finished texture. Too little can leave sharp, poorly sealed peaks and trap soil. More resin can create a smoother surface, but it may reduce texture and change the system’s intended slip behavior. Broadcast floors should be judged as complete assemblies, not by the chips alone.
Topcoat: the surface that meets the room
The topcoat is the visible wear layer. It encounters shoes, tires, carts, cleaners, spills, sunlight, and abrasion. It may be clear or pigmented, glossy or lower sheen, smooth or modified with traction aggregate.
Epoxy, polyurethane, polyaspartic, and other compatible technologies can serve as finish coats. Selection depends on the exact chemical and mechanical exposure, ultraviolet light, turnaround time, desired appearance, and maintenance method. A high-performance finish does not repair weak layers below it.
The system guide should state whether a second finish is optional or required. It should also define the recoat window. Once a layer cures beyond that window, the next coat may require cleaning and mechanical abrasion to establish intercoat adhesion.
Why compatibility matters
Resin layers continue reacting as they cure. One coat applied too soon may disturb the previous layer; one applied too late may not develop the intended bond without additional preparation. Solvents, pigments, aggregate, and additives can also affect the next material.
Use a tested manufacturer system or obtain written compatibility guidance. Mixing favorite products from different systems without documentation shifts risk to the floor owner. The fact that two cans both say “epoxy” does not make them interchangeable.
How to compare coating proposals
Instead of comparing the number of coats alone, ask:
- How will the slab be assessed and mechanically prepared?
- What exact product is used in each layer?
- What target coverage or thickness applies?
- Is the broadcast partial, full, single, or double?
- How will loose media be removed and texture adjusted?
- What finish provides the needed UV, abrasion, chemical, and gloss performance?
- What are the recoat and return-to-service stages?
One properly specified body coat can supply more useful build than two thin coats. Conversely, an extra primer or finish may be essential on a particular slab. Layer count makes sense only with product, coverage, and purpose.
The bottom line
A resinous floor works as a stack. Prepared concrete supports the bond. Primer establishes the first layer. The base supplies build and receives decoration. Broadcast changes texture and appearance. Grout locks it together. The topcoat takes the wear.
