Quartz Broadcast Floors: When Extra Texture and Build Matter

Quartz broadcast flooring combines resin with colored mineral aggregate to create a dense, decorative surface. It is often considered for wet rooms, high-traffic commercial spaces, service areas, and facilities that need more texture or build than a simple roll coat can provide.

The aggregate is only one part of the system. Primer, receiver coats, number of broadcasts, grout coats, finish chemistry, and final texture all determine how the floor performs and how difficult it is to clean.

What a quartz broadcast floor is

Colored quartz is a hard mineral aggregate graded to a consistent size and supplied in solid colors or blends. Installers cast it into an uncured resin coat, often until the wet surface will accept no more. After cure, loose aggregate is removed and the retained quartz is sealed with one or more compatible resin layers.

One common sequence is:

  1. Mechanically prepare and repair the concrete.
  2. Apply the specified primer.
  3. Place a resin body or receiver coat.
  4. Broadcast colored quartz into the wet resin.
  5. Remove excess aggregate after cure.
  6. Repeat the receiver coat and broadcast when the design calls for a double broadcast.
  7. Apply grout and finish coats to lock in the aggregate and set the final texture.

Manufacturers also design quartz systems with epoxy, polyaspartic, or cementitious-urethane layers for different environments. Do not assume that all quartz floors share the same chemistry, thickness, cure time, or moisture tolerance.

Why add quartz to a resin floor?

A properly designed broadcast can contribute several useful characteristics:

  • Texture: The mineral profile creates more surface relief than a smooth roll coat.
  • Build: Aggregate becomes part of the system, especially in double-broadcast designs.
  • Wear surface: Hard mineral particles help create a robust, traffic-ready assembly when they are fully bonded and sealed.
  • Appearance: Multicolor blends provide a consistent granular field and can coordinate with a facility’s palette.
  • Visual hiding: The dense pattern can make dust and ordinary wear less conspicuous than on a solid glossy color.

These are system-level benefits, not guarantees from loose aggregate. Insufficient resin, poor broadcast technique, missed grout, or an incompatible topcoat can leave a weak or difficult-to-maintain surface.

Single broadcast vs. double broadcast

A single-broadcast system embeds quartz in one receiver layer before sealing. A double-broadcast system repeats the resin-and-aggregate sequence. The second broadcast can increase build, create denser coverage, and support a more robust specification.

More layers also require more material, labor, cure coordination, and quality control. A double broadcast is not automatically necessary in every restroom or garage. Traffic, impact, chemicals, wet use, expected service life, substrate condition, and budget should support the added construction.

Texture and cleanability pull in opposite directions

Aggressive texture gives footwear and wheels more relief to engage. The same peaks and valleys give soil, grease, and residue more places to collect. The grout and finish coats control how much of the quartz profile remains exposed.

For areas that are routinely wet, consider the complete operating condition:

  • Water, oil, food residue, detergent, or process contamination
  • Footwear and the direction and speed of traffic
  • Floor slope, drainage, and standing-water locations
  • Cleaning tools, frequency, water temperature, and chemicals
  • Whether carts or small wheels need a smoother route

No texture eliminates slip risk, and no coating by itself certifies a workplace as compliant. OSHA requires walking-working surfaces to be kept clean, orderly, and as dry as feasible, with hazardous conditions corrected. A floor system can support that plan, but drainage, housekeeping, inspection, footwear, and operating procedures remain essential.

Where quartz systems commonly fit

Quartz broadcast designs are considered for commercial kitchens, restrooms, locker rooms, healthcare and laboratory spaces, schools, corridors, service areas, retail, and light industrial rooms. The relevant feature differs by space. A kitchen may prioritize cleanability, wet-use texture, coves, drainage, and chemical exposure. A corridor may prioritize wear, cart traffic, color, and simple maintenance.

That is why “quartz” is not the full specification for commercial kitchen floor coatings. Food-service work may also involve local health requirements, transitions, penetrations, thermal exposure, and cleaning chemicals that must be verified for the actual facility. Preparation and new concrete still control the schedule

The broadcast cannot compensate for a contaminated or weak slab. Concrete must be mechanically prepared to the profile required by the system, and cracks, joints, oil, old coatings, curing compounds, and moisture need deliberate treatment.

New concrete is not ready merely because its surface looks light in color. Strength development, moisture, curing method, surface treatments, and the coating manufacturer’s minimum age and test requirements all matter. Finish chemistry changes performance

The topcoat is the layer exposed to abrasion, spills, cleaners, light, and traffic. Epoxy, polyurethane, polyaspartic, and other approved finishes have different strengths and limits. A urethane topcoat over epoxy, for example, may be chosen for a particular combination of abrasion, chemicals, gloss, or color retention.

Chemical resistance should be matched to actual substances, concentrations, temperatures, contact times, and cleanup. “Chemical resistant” is not a universal shield. The owner should provide an exposure list before the system is selected.

How to evaluate a quartz-floor proposal

  • Is it a single- or double-broadcast design?
  • What resin receives each broadcast?
  • What aggregate size and color blend are specified?
  • How will loose aggregate be recovered and high points removed?
  • Which grout and topcoats set the final texture?
  • How will the slab be tested, repaired, and profiled?
  • What cleaning method is planned after installation?
  • Which test data addresses the actual traffic and chemical exposure?

The bottom line

Quartz broadcast flooring is useful when a project needs a decorative mineral surface with adjustable texture and added system build. Its main design challenge is balance: enough texture for the operating conditions, enough sealer for durability and cleaning, and no unsupported promise that the surface cannot become slippery.
